Simple Extraction Method #1
Not all of these steps are necessary, but they will insure that you have a cleaner end product which will taste better.
1 ounce of hemp flowers
A Fifth of high proof alcohol (100 proof vodka will work fine. Everclear will make for a stronger extraction, but has a bit more bite to it)
Step 1: Cut up or grind your plant material into small pieces.
Step 2: Put most of the alcohol (you’ll want to save a little to pour over the hemp in the strainer to get a more full extraction) and the hemp in a pot, cover with a lid, and simmer for about 20 min. What this does is to pull the good stuff out of the hemp while decarboxylating it at the same time. Decarboxylation is the process by where the CBDa molecule degrades into the CBD molecule. Alcohol has a low boiling point, so it helps keep your hemp from burning AND retains the terpenes keeping the amazing flavors. You will know your hemp is ready when it starts to turn a little brown. Some people like to heat their hemp to higher temperatures in the oven (250F) for a more full decarboxylation, but I’ve gotten good lab reports back from this method. If you want to decarb in the oven, you can just mix the hemp in a jar with the liquor for a few days shaking it up from time to time and skip to step 3.
Step 3: Pour hemp through a kitchen filter to discard the plant material. You’ll probably want to pour a little more liquor over after it has drained to get as much of the good stuff as possible. You don’t have to use a coffee filter, something that allows the liquid to flow is good enough. The finer filtration process will be taken care of by time and gravity.
Step 4: Make sure your extraction is in a clear glass jar and let it sit in the sun for about an hour. This makes the chlorophyll drop out and produces a much tastier product.
Step 5: Let it sit for a day or so and the sediment will drop to the bottom, then pour off or siphon into another jar. This gives you a much cleaner and tastier product without having to buy any expensive filtration machinery. I usually give the sediment to my dogs by pouring some over their food. They love it and it makes them feel great.
Step 6: Winterization. Just put your extract in the freezer over night. This makes all the fats, lipids, and solids congeal and drop out.
Step 7: Again, let everything fall to the bottom of the jar and siphon or pour off into another jar. You now have an amazing Full Spectrum CBD tincture that you can use to make whatever you like with.
Step 8: If you want to take this further and remove all the alcohol, place in a mason jar and put it on a coffee burner. The coffee burner will make it just hot enough to evaporate off the alcohol without cooking your hemp oil. It will pop and bubble as it gets closer to being finished and what you will end up with will look like a tar. You won’t be able to get 100% of the alcohol out without using fancier equipment, but this will work nicely for anything you are making for yourself. This is the hemp version of Rick Simpson Oil, and what processors use to make a variety of hemp products from sublingual oils, vape oils, beauty products, you name it.
